ARTICLE: In the Darkest Night, the Stars Shine Brightest
by Fred Black
What makes the difference between one person coming out of a desperate situation a success and another person coming out a failure? I was recently telling someone about the great Antarctic Explorer Earnest Shackleton and his failed Antarctic expedition. He turned certain death and failure into survival and brought his entire crew home alive after almost 2 years of stranded isolation in the Antarctic. You can find success stories like this all around you, probably on a smaller scale, if you look for them. Perhaps you have turned a bleak situation into a great positive outcome. So what is it that separates the champions from the defeated?
A winner is a winner is a winner, even when they happen to lose. Everyone loses. A winner gets back up, learns from his or her mistakes, and tries again. A winner does not give up. A winner does not look to place blame or point fingers. A winner takes consistent action, even if the steps are small and painful. It's all about having a positive, winning attitude and it's all about belief.
The difference between a winner and a loser is that a winner believes they'll win, that success for them is inevitable. A winner believes in something larger, a positive higher power. They do not, cannot, accept failure. A winner exudes an infectious winning attitude and infects others with it. A winner visualizes a positive end result. A winner gives something back, shares, and reaches out and tries to help others.
A winner looks at a dark night and realizes that the stars shine brighter the darker the night gets - a winner IS one of those stars.
To borrow a saying from the stock market, "All ships rise with the tide". Winning, like losing, is contagious. Hang around with a loser and you'll start picking up losing habits and before long, a losing frame of mind. You'll become desensitized to losing and come to think it's normal. I'd rather spend my time with winners than losers, wouldn't you? Hang around with someone who's a winner, who's better at something than you are and pretty soon you'll become better too. You'll become a winner!
